river birch

Question
I have a river birch that is 6 or 7 feet from the back of my house.  The house is on a slab and I can see a couple of roots that have probably gone under the slab.  Do I need to have the tree cut down?  It's in the perfect low, wet spot and is probably 30-40 feet high.

Answer
You should not have a problem with root damage from a river birch--their root system is fiberious and I could find no one who has cited root problems with this species. As the tree grows the limbs may rub against your house causing problems but this can be solved by pruning back the limbs.
