cedar trees

Question
We recently acquired 5 15ft cedar trees and have planted them in our backyard. I am worried that the trees won't make it through the winter.  Is there something that we can do to help there chance of survival?  We live in Peru, New York and the winters can be extremely cold.

Answer
Mulch around the tree with not more than 3 inches deep of organic mulch not piled up on the trunk. Pine straw is good if you can find it there. This will help insulate the roots from the cold. I would water them until the first freezing weather sets in with 1 inch of water per week-place a pan under the trees and turn the sprinkler on and when the pan has 1 inch of water in it stop. Do this once a week. This will keep the roots moist.
